  • Best thing

    My team. By far and away the main reason I'm still there is my team, the staff are excellent and we do genuinely care about our standards and our service. Now that I've been there a while I have freedom to experiment with new cocktails, promote monthly specials I've made, it's great! I do love my job despite a few issues.

    Worst thing

    Pretty much everything else besides the team itself sucks. The pay sucks, and they will ask you to do extra jobs for the same pay. For example, as a mixologist, to progress you'll be made supervisor, but there is no jump in pay with that role change. Bar managers are paid 70p/hour more than the mixologist wage. We doing get paid while on break, and more often than not I find it hard to take a break, and never a full uninterrupted 30 minutes, even on a 12 hour shift. The break is still taken off your hours even if you don't take it. Senior management seems very unapproachable, and when you do approach them with issues, they will brush them off or tell you to stop being so negative rather than actually addressing your issues or explaining why things are done that way, although this only seems to be the case with food and beverage staff.

    Staffing is often a big issue, with senior management not being willing to increase the number of staff so our working conditions are better and we can take breaks. We need 2 people in the afternoon shift and 4 people on each shift pattern to make this possible, yet outside of the busiest periods of bookings we will be given 2 or 3 staff members in evenings and 1 in the afternoon until 4pm. This includes managers and supervisors.

    Worst thing

    Department gets treated like it means nothing to the company, our needs are constantly ignored. No praise, constant criticism. Double standards when it comes to food safety, they don’t care that reception don’t adhere to food safety standards every day but if we make one mistake they make a big deal of it. Understaffed. Awful pay. Everyone in my department is affected mentally by this job, losing sleep due to the stress of working there.
