What Caffè Nero employees say about their job

  • Best thing

You learn how to make good coffee.

    Worst thing

You get 20 minutes for an unpaid break, no break room so you sit in isolation waiting to return to work. This is too short to go somewhere else to buy food so you'll spend your wage in the store you work.

Sometimes you're asked to go home an hour early by the manager to save the store money when it's not busy. They're taking your wage when you do that.

Managers are rude, poorly trained and don't live in the real world. The shout at people for not doing more jobs at once, don't think about looking at a blender as it bends the customers drink.

The Trafford centre store is too hot.

You only get 30 minutes to clean and close the whole store, this is not enough time. If you go over you won't be paid.

Morale is poor because you're working short shifts and having to come in all week.

Days off are random and not together.

Why is a coffee shop open til 10pm anyway?

The store averages £5k sales a day, we know because it's written on the blackboard. This rubs it in the face of everyone working who is always told to up sell to make more money for the store. There is zero commission.

The space to prepare coffee is far too small. It's an accident waiting to happen.

    No parking.

I could go on but I won't. Don't work there.

  • Best thing

    Free coffee?? That's probably it

    Worst thing

Everything else, everyone on the team hates it here and the manager treats us like dirt and doesn't train people, and if you ask for help you get "I'm not here to baby you" even if you're new

  • Best thing

Getting to leave at the end of the day

    Worst thing

Long hours, 20 minute unpaid break for a 9.5 hours shift, customers are extremely rude, management will ALWAYS take the customers side, you’ll get written up for literally anything, you will get a disciplinary meeting if you call out 3 times within 3 months, understaffed constantly, they don’t care about you

    1.8

Barista at Caffè Nero, November 2024

  • Best thing

I get to have a great team that I’m friends with and often get some cool customers.

    Worst thing

Sometimes don’t get the best of customers. My hours can have drastic changes sometimes leaving me without enough sleep

    6.2

Barista at Caffè Nero, July 2023

  • Best thing

Depends what shop you're in but mine is great, team and manager are all very supportive and nice

    Worst thing

The customers expecting a lot more from us mere baristas like we aren't getting paid minimum wage

    6.0

Shift leader at Caffè Nero, April 2023

  • Best thing

The team i get to work with is amazing and i've been able to become friendly with regular customers too!

    Worst thing

The amount of training you get is pretty much up to your manager. You're gonna need to ask for help with things a lot for a while too, the training never covers everything. Lots of lone closes due to hour cuts, means you won't get paid for the time it may take you to close the shop.

    6.0

Shift leader at Caffè Nero, February 2023

  • Best thing

The team I currently work with are amazing, and I really believe in the more authentic coffee experience we provide.

    Worst thing

The pay is appalling - an assistant manager at Nero is paid less than a team member at Pret.
There is no bonus scheme or mystery shopper.
Breaks are 20mins long and are docked from your pay.
Head Office are completely clueless - I work(ed, I am leaving after this treatment) at a shop that brought in £28k a week. For reference, most Neros might average £16k-£20k in our area. We do not receive any reward for this, are not paid more for the more intense environment than the street-facing shops.

    4.2

Shift leader at Caffè Nero, November 2022

  • Best thing

My team, the lovely regulars who make my job satisfying, the relaxed atmosphere, the flexibility, it's good job for uni students because you can do your minimum contracted hours or more hours depending on the week, I have good manager, easy job once trained.

    Worst thing

Minimum wage, 20 minute lunch break, rude customers, constant staff shortages, not being paid for work you're doing (for example, having to work beyond paid hours to properly close the shop), head office pandering to ridiculous complaints made by difficult to deal with and entitled regulars.

    5.5

Shift leader at Caffè Nero, September 2022

  • Best thing

Interaction with public, regular customers are really pleased to see you daily.
When the right team is on it feels effortless.
    Half price coffee!

    Worst thing

Head office don't seem to appreciate the store staff.
Alot of words with little action on behalf of staff wellbeing.
Underpaid compared with other high Street coffee shops.
The ladder of promotion is quite narrow and doesn't have too many pathways into other roles in the company.

    5.5

Shift leader at Caffè Nero, May 2022

  • Best thing

Easy to get promoted and I have a good team

    Worst thing

Constant changes. Being asked to move store when I don't want too. The lone working. Head office and area managers not understanding how stressful it can get. The drug addiction in the city
