What B&Q employees say about their job

  • Best thing

Some colleagues, easy parking, staff discount, lovely management and team leaders, decent pay

    Worst thing

Awful HR, lack of support and pay during chronic illness, uniform orders taking an unusually long time (more than acceptable by modern standards), workplace bully still has a role despite numerous official complaints over years, incorrect pay for overtime or standard hourly pay, this was handled manually by the HR guy (only recently changed to automated)

Very backwards approach to sick leave and holidays, for example you get your holiday revoked and unpaid if you happen to be sick on either end of the holiday period.

  • Best thing

It pays well staff are nice

    Worst thing

Some managers treat me like a burden and because of that it makes me not enjoy my shift also I’m not happy in my department and they know that and won’t do anything about it.

    Worst thing

The lack of stability and staff

Showroom advisor at B&Q, October 2024

  • Best thing

    Colleagues, pay.

    Worst thing

Bad management, every cut possible to our earnings has been done, lost bonus, lost paid breaks, lost sunday pay, cut to bank holiday pay. Staffing levels cut to dangerous levels but workload has increased , managers dont care, dont listen and staff turnover at all time high levels. No training on products so its impossible for most staff to give advice.

Customer advisor at B&Q, October 2024

  • Best thing

The best thing about where I work is being able to talk to people; getting a good social balance whilst working is amazing

    Worst thing

The managers are very two-faced and have rules for us as advisors, and rules for them. My personal manager on front-end is a bit lacking in managerial skill and isn't the best at being a leader

    5.5

Customer advisor at B&Q, July 2024

  • Best thing

Having a decent support network with my department of people who understand your issues or questions you may have.

    Worst thing

The fact that we get blamed fir issues customers face when we've gone out of our way to order or design exactly what they wanted. Secondly, customer services or escalations nearly always seem to cause more problems then solve.

    7.5

Showrooms advisor at B&Q, August 2023

  • Best thing

    Reasonable pay

    Worst thing

Often no overtime available (so not helpful during breaks from uni); managers expect you to be very flexible with working shifts and push for you to work every weekend when you’re not entirely flexible during the week. Management mostly help their own departments and let others in store struggle. Very difficult to get any increase in contracted hours (unless you agree to work all weekend, every weekend)

    5.5

Customer advisor at B&Q, November 2022

  • Best thing

most of the staff are lovely
    nice break rooms
walking distance to maccies and subway
    great pay for first job

    Worst thing

a few staff are really quite nasty
not enough raining given then blamed for making mistakes due to not knowing certain rules as such poor training
    get some really dodgey customers

    6.0

Customer assistant at B&Q, February 2022

  • Best thing

Great Colleagues, Everyone is friendly and Helpful, Great Pride of Work, Good Management, Good flexibility of Choice of Hours, Decent Pay

    Worst thing

Stressful and Boring, Always on your Feet, Company doesn't understand Workload, 1 Break for 15 Mins for over 6 hours, Don't get much variety of workload, no choice what workload, Get disciplinary for drinking anything other than water. Customers are awful, amongst the most Rude, arrogant, selfish and moronic people I have ever met.

    6.4

Customer advisor at B&Q, February 2022

  • Best thing

The hours are regular and occasionally overtime’s available but not compulsory, often bargains are available to staff before customers. 1hour lunch breaks are great and I always take them at a reasonable time. The workplace is local and some colleagues are friendly, there’s often someone who can handle Amy issues customers present to you.

    Worst thing

Unskilled management team who have their own agendas, often trying to give different instructions through the day. Petty school playground mentality amongst staff and many who bring their outside issues into the workplace. Equipment to carry out different work tasks is very limited preventing effective and satisfactory customer service.
